Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for urgent action to end obstetric fistula and other preventable maternal health conditions affecting women and girls.
In a message marking the 2026 International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, the First Lady stressed that no woman or girl should suffer from a condition that is both preventable and treatable.
Referencing this year’s theme, “Her Health, Her Right: Shaping a Future without Fistula,” Tinubu said access to quality maternal healthcare is a fundamental human right that must be guaranteed for all.
She identified early marriage and teenage pregnancy as major contributors to obstetric fistula, noting that many young girls are not physically developed for childbirth.
She also highlighted harmful traditional practices and lack of awareness as factors limiting access to skilled care and essential health information.
The First Lady urged stakeholders to prioritise ending child marriage, expanding access to education for girls, and improving healthcare services nationwide.
She further called for collective action to ensure safer childbirth outcomes, emphasising the need to build a future where no woman dies or suffers injury during delivery.
Tinubu concluded by wishing Nigerians a meaningful International Day to End Obstetric Fistula.
