The House of Representatives has approved an extension of the implementation period for the capital aspect of the 2025 budget, shifting the deadline from June 30, 2026, to September 30, 2026.
Naijaonpoint reports that the decision followed the consideration of a bill seeking to prolong the lifespan of the budget’s capital expenditure component.
The proposal was presented during plenary by the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, who led lawmakers through the debate on the bill’s general principles.
According to the House, a large portion of funds already released to various Ministries, Departments and Agencies has not been fully utilised.
Lawmakers attributed the situation to a range of challenges, including delays in procurement processes, administrative difficulties and other obstacles affecting project execution.
The extension is expected to provide government agencies with additional time to continue and complete ongoing projects across different parts of the country.
It is also intended to prevent important infrastructure projects from being left unfinished and to enable the settlement of pending financial commitments connected to approved projects.
The approval came during an emergency sitting of the House of Representatives.
Members had earlier been notified of the session through a memo issued by the Acting Clerk of the House, Ibrahim Sidi.
The notice informed lawmakers that the emergency plenary would take place at 11 a.m. in line with the provisions of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives.
With the extension now approved, federal agencies responsible for implementing capital projects under the 2025 budget will have an extra three months to utilize allocated funds and advance projects that are still in progress before the new September deadline.
