Residents of Achimota Mile 7 in Accra have been forced to climb onto the roofs of their homes for safety after early morning rainfall triggered severe flooding that submerged large sections of the community.
Footage captured by EDHUB shows an aerial view of the flooded neighbourhood, with rooftops barely visible above the rising brown floodwater.
Palm trees are seen bending sharply in the storm, and a person in a bright orange raincoat is visible stranded on one of the rooftops, surrounded by water on all sides.
According to a resident who spoke on the matter, multiple attempts to reach emergency services for assistance had been made but calls went unanswered, leaving those trapped on rooftops without any immediate prospect of rescue at the time of reporting.
The flooding adds Achimota Mile 7 to a growing list of Accra communities severely impacted by the current rainy season, with the Spintex to Polo Grounds corridor also recording dangerous flood levels earlier in the day.
The National Disaster Management Organisation, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly had not issued a public statement on the Achimota Mile 7 flooding situation or the reported failure of emergency response lines as of press time.
Accra’s chronic flooding problem has been attributed to a combination of factors including inadequate and poorly maintained drainage infrastructure, construction on waterways and flood plains, and the rapid expansion of impermeable surfaces across the city.
Residents of flood-prone communities are being urged to move to higher ground immediately during heavy rainfall and to avoid contact with floodwaters, which often carry sewage and other hazardous contaminants.
