Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on Lagos residents to actively participate in the resumption of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, stressing that a cleaner city depends on collective responsibility.
In a message shared ahead of the exercise, the governor said the initiative goes beyond infrastructure development, noting that environmental care is central to building a greater Lagos.
“From 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., I ask everyone to play their part,” Sanwo-Olu said, urging residents, landlords and business owners to take practical steps to improve their immediate surroundings.
The governor emphasised the need for proper waste management, advising residents to clear gutters around their properties and ensure refuse is properly packaged for collection by the Lagos Waste Management Authority.
He warned that blocked drainage systems and poor waste disposal practices continue to pose significant threats to public health and infrastructure, particularly through flooding and environmental hazards.
Sanwo-Olu noted that while Lagos remains a fast-paced city where residents’ time is valuable, maintaining a clean environment should not require enforcement alone but a sense of personal responsibility.
“Nobody should need reminders or pressure to keep their space clean. It is your home, so take care of it,” he said.
The governor stressed that the sanitation exercise is a shared duty between government and citizens, adding that consistent participation would help transform neighbourhoods and improve living conditions across the state.
He expressed optimism that the renewed initiative would foster a culture of cleanliness and civic pride, urging residents to support efforts aimed at making Lagos safer, healthier and more resilient.
“Let’s work together to make our neighbourhoods reflect the excellence we all talk about,” Sanwo-Olu added.
