The Senate has announced a significant leadership change in one of its key oversight committees, as Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada has been replaced by Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, PhD, as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.
The decision, confirmed during plenary, forms part of the Senate’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its oversight functions and enhance accountability in the management of public funds.
The Public Accounts Committee plays a vital role in scrutinizing government expenditures and audit reports, making its leadership crucial to ensuring transparency and fiscal discipline.
Senator Dankwambo, a former two-term Governor of Gombe State and former Accountant-General of the Federation, is widely regarded as a seasoned financial expert. His extensive experience in public finance, taxation, forensic accounting, and governance is expected to significantly improve the committee’s effectiveness in executing its mandate.
Prior to this appointment, Senator Dankwambo served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics.
Senator Wadada’s replacement is linked to his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee is traditionally reserved for a member of the opposition in line with legislative convention.
