Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has announced plans to begin the installation of free public internet infrastructure across parts of Kogi Central under the Kogi Central Open Space Internet Project.
According to the senator, the first phase of the project will commence next week in Ajaokuta, Okene and Okehi Local Government Areas through the Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan Foundation.
The initiative is aimed at expanding digital access and improving internet connectivity for residents, businesses, students and young people within the senatorial district.
In a statement shared on social media, the project is expected to provide outdoor omnidirectional access points with a 500-metre radius coverage, equivalent to about one kilometre in diameter. The infrastructure is also designed to support up to 512 concurrent device connections with internet speeds of up to 5.95Gbps.
The senator said the service would provide free internet access 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“In keeping with our promise, the Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan Foundation will commence the installation of digital infrastructure in three Local Government Areas next week,” the statement read.
The foundation described the project as part of broader efforts to bridge connectivity gaps and open digital opportunities across Kogi Central.
“Across Europe, the Middle East, the Americas and other regions of the world, free public WiFi access has become an essential tool for learning, business, communication and innovation,” the statement added.
The announcement has drawn attention online as public internet infrastructure projects remain limited in many parts of Nigeria, especially in semi-urban and rural communities where internet access and digital infrastructure are still developing.
Akpoti-Uduaghan said the project represents a forward-thinking technology initiative designed to ensure Kogi Central is not left behind in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
She also urged residents to protect the installations, noting that the infrastructure is meant to serve the wider community.
