No fewer than seven students were injured after suspected gunmen attacked a hostel at the Ebonyi State College of Health Science and Technology in Ngbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.
The attack occurred around 1 a.m. on Tuesday when the armed assailants reportedly invaded the hostel and robbed students of their valuables.
The victims sustained varying degrees of injuries during the operation, which caused panic among students and residents of the institution.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Police Command, Joshua Ukandu, said investigations had commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Ukandu, however, did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The attack adds to a growing list of security breaches recorded in tertiary institutions across the country in recent years.
Last week, a student of Lagos State University (LASU), Joseph Otabor, died from injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.
According to the university’s spokesperson, Olaniyi Jeariogbe, the student, who was studying History and International Studies, was attacked alongside some friends outside the campus at night.
Similarly, in June 2025, a student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, in Niger State, was killed during an armed robbery incident, prompting Governor Umar Bago to temporarily shut down the institution.
In another incident, armed robbers invaded the Awolowo Hall female hostel at the University of Ibadan in February 2025, carting away mobile phones, jewellery, clothing and other personal belongings during a raid that reportedly lasted more than an hour.
The latest attack in Ebonyi has renewed concerns over the safety of students in higher institutions and the need for improved security measures on campuses nationwide.
