A covert Israeli military base hidden deep inside western Iraq reportedly became a crucial hub during Israel’s recent operations against Iran, but the mission almost failed within days, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The secret outpost was set up in a remote desert region and used as a launchpad for rescue teams, special forces, and logistics supporting Israeli airstrikes inside Iran. The base allowed Israel to operate nearly 1,000 miles away from its territory while keeping backup teams ready in case something went wrong.
How The Secret Operation Was Nearly Exposed
The operation came close to being uncovered in early March when a local shepherd reported unusual helicopter activity in the area. Iraqi troops moved toward the suspected site to investigate.
As Iraqi soldiers approached the location in Humvees at dawn, they reportedly came under heavy fire. One soldier was killed and two others were injured. Israeli forces then carried out airstrikes to stop Iraqi troops from reaching the base.
Why Israel Set Up The Base
The base was meant to support Israeli air operations deep inside Iran. Officials feared that pilots could be shot down far from home and needed quick rescue support.
These concerns became real when a US F-15 aircraft crashed near Isfahan earlier in the conflict. Israel reportedly offered to assist in rescuing the American crew, although US forces handled the mission themselves. Israeli strikes did help secure the rescue effort.
After the clash, Iraq filed a complaint at the United Nations, initially blaming the United States for the attack. However, US forces were not involved. The operation was carried out solely by Israel.
While Israel has not officially confirmed details, outgoing Israeli Air Force chief Tomer Bar hinted at secret missions, praising special units for operations that “could ignite the imagination.”
