The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Office of the Tax Ombud, Dr. John Nwabueze, has said the newly established institution is aimed at protecting taxpayers’ rights and improving public confidence in Nigeria’s tax administration.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement in Lagos on Thursday, Nwabueze said the office would serve as an independent platform for resolving complaints and ensuring fairness in tax-related matters.

The engagement, which brought together representatives of professional bodies, focused on the theme, “Promoting Fairness, Transparency and Trust in Nigeria.”
According to him, voluntary tax compliance depends largely on citizens’ confidence in the integrity of the tax system.
“Taxpayers are the reason we exist. People are more willing to meet their tax obligations when they believe the system is fair, transparent, predictable and accountable,” he said.
He noted that the Office of the Tax Ombud was established to provide an impartial mechanism for addressing grievances and strengthening trust between taxpayers and tax authorities.

Nwabueze also acknowledged the Federal Government’s ongoing tax reforms, saying the creation of the office reflects efforts to improve accountability and fairness within the country’s tax administration.
