The Presidency has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his recent defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The reaction came from the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who accused Peter Obi of political inconsistency and opportunism.
Onanuga, in a statement via his 𝕏 handle on Sunday, said the former Anambra State governor’s latest political move had confirmed what the Presidency had previously said about him.
NewsWatch Nigeria reported earlier that Obi, on Sunday, announced d his decision to leave the ADC.
In the statement, Obi described the current political climate as hostile and discouraging, adding that even within political alliances, individuals sometimes face unexpected opposition and criticism.
He clarified that his decision was not influenced by any personal issues with party leaders, including David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The former governor said recurring internal disputes and legal challenges within the party influenced his exit.
He likened the situation to earlier challenges he faced within the Labour Party, reaffirming his belief in leadership as service, stressing that he has never used power to oppress others.
He also dismissed suggestions that his actions were driven by personal ambition.
Onanuga Accuses Obi Of Political Inconsistency
Reacting to Obi’s move, Onanuga described the former governor as a “political nomad,” saying he was once again moving from one political platform to another ahead of a presidential contest.
He said, “We told you so. The political nomad is on the move again. Ignore all those puerile reasons he gave in these illogical musings, a self-serving letter to his mob.”
The presidential aide said Obi’s reasons for leaving the ADC should be ignored, insisting that the explanation was designed to appeal to his supporters.
Onanuga further accused Obi of avoiding a tough political contest within the ADC.
According to him, Obi moved to the NDC because he could not compete with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, for the ADC presidential ticket.
He said, “Peter Obi is a politician made of jelly, an opportunistic fellow. He can’t fight Atiku or Amaechi for the ticket of ADC.”
Onanuga argued that Obi’s decision to move to another party showed that he preferred what he described as the easier political route.
He added that the move would not guarantee him victory in 2027.
‘Easy Road Will Lead To Doom’
The presidential aide said Obi’s latest political step could end the same way as his 2023 presidential bid.
He stated, “He pursues the easy road, that will only lead him to doom, like in 2023.”
Onanuga also accused Obi of constantly blaming the government without examining his own political decisions and weaknesses.
He said, “He always blames the government without doing a soul-searching of himself.”
The Presidency’s reaction comes as political movements and alignments continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, emerged as one of the major opposition figures in the race.
His movement from the ADC to the NDC is expected to further shape discussions within opposition circles as parties begin early preparations for the next election cycle.
Onanuga ended his reaction by welcoming the former governor into the 2027 race.
He said, “Welcome, Peter to the 2027 race.”
