US President Donald Trump said the United States was “doing very well” on the Strait of Hormuz and insisted that the strategic waterway was “totally open”, even as Iran declared that it would continue to administer the vital shipping route.
Speaking at the White House, Trump said, “The Strait of Hormuz is totally open,” and added, “We’re doing very well on the strait.” He also claimed that shipping traffic had resumed through the key passage. According to reports, Trump said the route was reopened on Friday, and vessel movement increased over the weekend.
Iran says Hormuz will remain under its administration
Trump’s remarks came after Iran’s parliamentary speaker and chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the Strait of Hormuz would continue to be administered by Tehran and would not return to pre-war conditions.
Ghalibaf said Iran plans to establish a communication mechanism for ships passing through the area to prevent incidents and ensure safe navigation.
Why the Strait of Hormuz matters
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. Nearly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass through the narrow waterway, making it crucial for international trade and energy markets.
Any disruption in shipping through the strait can affect oil prices and global supply chains.
US-Iran talks continue
The latest statements come amid ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran aimed at ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and reducing tensions in the region.
US officials have maintained that commercial traffic continues to move through the waterway, while Iran has signalled that it intends to play a larger role in managing the route.
Trump has warned that the United States would respond if Iran failed to honour any agreement, saying, “I will do what I have to do.”
