Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has inaugurated the country’s new Strategic Command Headquarters, a massive eight-sided military complex named The Octagon. Spread across nearly 22,000 acres, the facility is being described as the world’s largest military headquarters, significantly larger than the US Pentagon.
New military hub in Egypt’s administrative capital
The Octagon is located in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, around 45 kilometres east of Cairo. The project is part of the country’s broader effort to modernise its defence infrastructure and centralise military command.
The complex will serve as the main command and defence headquarters for the Egyptian Armed Forces, bringing key military operations under one roof.
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi officially inaugurated the facility on July 4, calling it a national achievement and a major step forward in Egypt’s command, control and operations management capabilities.
What does the Octagon include?
Officially known as the State Strategic Command Headquarters, the complex covers approximately 22,000 acres and includes 13 integrated strategic and logistical zones.
According to Egypt’s State Information Service, it is the largest military complex of its kind in the Middle East.

The headquarters has been designed as an advanced defence and administrative hub, integrating command, control, communications and artificial intelligence systems to support military operations. While media reports have highlighted the scale of the project, the Egyptian government has not disclosed the construction cost.
How does it compare with the Pentagon?
The Octagon is already drawing comparisons with the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense in Virginia.
The Pentagon’s main building covers about 29 acres, while its entire campus, including the Pentagon Reservation and Central Plaza, spans roughly 34 to 41 acres.

By comparison, Egypt’s new military headquarters covers nearly 22,000 acres, making it approximately 750 times larger than the Pentagon in terms of land area, according to the figures cited in the report.
