Amid rising global tensions and increasing military competition, China has made a significant discovery in the field of rare earth minerals. Scientists have identified 17 rare metals from broken rock formations in the country’s remote icy regions. These minerals are considered crucial for manufacturing missiles, fighter jets and other advanced military equipment.

According to scientists, the newly identified elements include cerium, neodymium and dysprosium, all of which are widely used in defense technology. China already dominates the global rare earth market, accounting for nearly 90 percent of worldwide exports and this discovery could further strengthen its position.

Discovery made in snow-covered regions

According to a report published by the South China Morning Post, the rare earth elements were discovered in China’s icy northeastern regions after snow began melting in the area. Scientists then started detailed geological surveys, which eventually led to the major breakthrough.

The survey was conducted in the provinces of Heilongjiang and Jilin using soil samples collected from weathered rock formations.

How the rare metals were found

Geologists explained that the region was originally covered with alkaline granite rocks. Over time, repeated cycles of freezing during winter and melting during summer caused these rocks to gradually crack and break apart.

Scientists later examined the scattered soil and rock particles, where they found two categories of rare earth minerals. Chinese geological teams say work on the project is now moving rapidly and extraction of the minerals could begin soon.

So far, investigations have confirmed the presence of cerium, neodymium and dysprosium in the region.

Why these minerals matter

Neodymium is used in the powerful magnets needed for motors inside fighter jets and missiles. These magnets help military systems operate at high speeds and with greater efficiency.

Dysprosium plays an equally important role by helping motors continue functioning under extremely high temperatures, which is critical in military environments.

Meanwhile, cerium is used in ignition systems and can help initiate sparks and combustion processes, including applications involving explosives and ammunition.

The discovery comes at a time when countries including the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom and Russia are rapidly increasing the production of missiles, fighter aircraft and advanced defense systems.

With global demand for rare earth minerals continuing to rise, China appears determined to maintain its dominant position in this strategically important sector.
