Tinubu Committed to Stronger, More Inclusive Nigeria, Says Information Minister

The Federal Government has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to building a stronger, more inclusive and more prosperous Nigeria, as the country marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at a press conference organised as part of activities marking Democracy Day 2026.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Rabiu Ibrahim, on Tuesday, June 9.

Idris said this year’s celebration was particularly significant as it coincides with the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration, offering Nigerians an opportunity to assess ongoing reforms and the country’s democratic progress.

“This year’s Democracy Day celebration is particularly significant as it coincides with the third anniversary of the Renewed Hope Administration. It offers an opportunity to take stock of our progress as a nation, review the impact of ongoing reforms, and reaffirm our collective commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive Nigeria,” he said.

He described Democracy Day as a symbolic moment in Nigeria’s national calendar, noting that it provides an avenue to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, honour national heroes, and celebrate institutional resilience.

“Democracy Day occupies a unique place in our national calendar. It provides an opportunity for us to reflect on our democratic journey, celebrate the resilience of our institutions, and honour the sacrifices of patriots who stood firm in the struggle for democratic governance,” he said.

The minister paid tribute to the late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola and other pro-democracy activists, including President Tinubu, who played roles in the struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria.

He described 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule as a major national milestone, saying it reflects the resilience and democratic aspirations of Nigerians.

“Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance is a milestone worthy of celebration. It is a testament to the determination of Nigerians to uphold democratic values, strengthen national institutions, and continuously strive for a more prosperous and united nation,” he stated.

Idris said the current administration remains focused on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting national unity, expanding economic opportunities and delivering sustainable development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He added that the press conference was convened to provide an update on government achievements over the past three years, as well as the challenges encountered and the policy direction going forward.

Also speaking at the event, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day 2026, George Akume, said Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democracy remained a major achievement of the nation’s political evolution.

Akume said the Tinubu administration’s reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange liberalisation, though difficult, were necessary steps toward long-term economic stability.

“The policy decisions of this administration, including the removal of fuel subsidy and foreign exchange reforms, were difficult but necessary. They have created fiscal space for critical investments in infrastructure, social interventions, education, healthcare, and economic development,” he said.

He expressed optimism that Nigerians would begin to experience broader economic benefits as ongoing reforms stabilise the economy.

The event was attended by ministers, presidential aides, permanent secretaries and heads of agencies, including the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev; Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari; Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; and Special Adviser to the President on Media and Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, among others.
