The Presidency has dismissed claims that former Finance Minister Wale Edun was removed from office, stating that he voluntarily resigned due to health concerns.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, the State House confirmed that both Edun and former Housing Minister Ahmed Musa Dangiwa resigned from their positions, contrary to reports suggesting they were sacked by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Edun stepped down on health grounds
According to the Presidency, Edun, who recently turned 70, submitted his resignation letter to the President on Monday, citing health reasons. His exit was formally announced on Tuesday after due process.
In his resignation letter, Edun expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve, describing his time in office as both a privilege and an honour.
“It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he wrote.
“Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected. I wish you and the administration every success in the future.”
Before the official announcement, Edun paid a valedictory visit to the President at the Presidential Villa, where both men held a private meeting lasting about an hour.
Dangiwa also exits government
Similarly, Dangiwa resigned from his role as Minister of Housing and Urban Development, thanking the President for the chance to serve in the Federal Executive Council.
An accomplished architect, Dangiwa previously served as Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank and Secretary to the Katsina State Government before his ministerial appointment in 2023.
Tinubu appreciates outgoing ministers
President Tinubu commended both former ministers for their contributions, particularly to the administration’s economic reform agenda, and wished them success in their future endeavours.
The President also urged the newly appointed Finance Minister, Taiwo Oyedele, to build on ongoing reforms and drive fiscal policies with renewed focus and innovation.
Meanwhile, the President is expected to forward the nomination of Muttaqha Rabe Darma as the new Housing Minister to the Senate for confirmation.
