President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governors have agreed to take immediate measures to reduce transport fares nationwide, with a focus on cheaper fuel from compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.
Tinubu disclosed this on Thursday after discussions with the Governors’ Forum, saying the initiative was aimed at ensuring Nigerians benefit directly from savings arising from the energy transition.
“Cheaper fuel should result in cheaper fares,” the President said.
He said more than 120,000 vehicles had been converted to CNG nationwide through the Presidential CNG Initiative, while over 100,000 additional conversion kits were being produced.
According to Tinubu, the Federal Government is also expanding CNG conversion centres and refuelling infrastructure across the country.
He said the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund was financing more than 100 gas projects, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations.
Tinubu added that he had directed the rollout of another 500 CNG refuelling stations nationwide, in addition to 500 stations earlier ordered by the Fund, bringing the planned total to 1,000 stations.
The President said intra-state transportation was where Nigerians felt transport costs most directly and stressed that state governments had a key role to play in reducing fares.
“We have agreed to set up a joint Federal and State committee to begin implementing these measures immediately,” he said.
Tinubu said a vehicle running on CNG could spend between 60 and 80 per cent less on fuel than one powered by petrol.
He said the goal was for Nigerians to begin benefiting from those savings through reduced transport fares from October 1, 2026.
“Each tier of government must keep doing its part and work together for the benefit of every Nigerian,” the President said.
