President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the death of the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf, describing his passing as a “profound loss” to Niger State and Nigeria.
Yusuf, aged 66, died on Friday, August 28, 2026, after a brief illness.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.
Tinubu commiserated with the government and people of Niger State, particularly the people of Wushishi Local Government Area, as well as Yusuf’s family, friends, associates and colleagues.
The President described the deceased as a distinguished son of Niger State, public servant and patriot who dedicated his life to serving his community, state and country.
Yusuf previously served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area and was involved in the political and administrative affairs of Niger State.
He also served on the board of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and was Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Niger State Governor.
Tinubu said Yusuf’s record of public service reflected his commitment to the development of the country.
“Dr Aminu Yusuf was a loyal public servant, a patriot and a distinguished son of Niger State whose life was defined by service and commitment to the common good,” he said.
The President said Yusuf’s death was a loss not only to his family and Niger State but also to the NPC and the country.
“His passing is a painful loss, not only to his family and the people of Niger State, but also to the National Population Commission and the entire nation,” Tinubu said.
He noted that although Yusuf’s tenure as NPC chairman was brief, he brought “a clear vision and an earnest commitment to strengthening the Commission” and ensuring that Nigeria had reliable demographic data for planning and development.
“We shall remember him for his service, his dedication and his contributions to our nation,” the President added.
Tinubu urged the NPC leadership and staff to sustain the late chairman’s legacy by continuing with the reforms and institutional strengthening he championed.
He also prayed for the repose of Yusuf’s soul and comfort for his family and associates.
“I pray that Almighty Allah will forgive his shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus and give his family, colleagues and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” Tinubu said.
