President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene in the deteriorating conditions of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba and Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti roads.
The directive followed growing complaints over the hardship faced by motorists and commuters, with some travellers reportedly spending several hours and, in some cases, days on the affected routes.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the intervention was aimed at restoring movement on the roads while permanent solutions were being pursued.
Umahi directed the Minister of State for Works to lead a team of ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis to assess the situation and commence immediate remedial works.
Officials of the ministry were already on the ground as of 10am on Tuesday to begin the intervention.
Meanwhile, Umahi travelled to Benin, Edo State, with members of the National Assembly Works Committees to coordinate a similar intervention on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road.
The meeting is expected to involve the Edo and Delta State governments as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission.
The minister expressed concern over the plight of commuters and apologised to motorists who had been stranded or delayed on the affected roads.
He assured road users that the Federal Government would combine immediate remedial measures with permanent solutions to restore the roads and improve their long-term reliability.
