Tokyo is set to host an unusual competition in which participants will compete to achieve the best sleep quality rather than physical or mental performance.

The event, scheduled for October 5, 2026, will see contestants sleep for 90 minutes simultaneously, with the winner determined using a specially developed “sleep index”.

According to Tokyo Times, sensors will be used to monitor participants throughout the competition, measuring factors including sleep depth and quality, the time taken to fall asleep and the stability of their sleep.

The overall winner will receive a top prize of 2.22 million yen, estimated at about 14,400 US dollars.

Organisers will also present special awards, including the “Deep Sleep Award” and a category known as “Acrobatic Flip”.

Participants will additionally receive a randomly selected “sleep gift”, although organisers have not disclosed what the gift will contain.

To prevent contestants from deliberately manipulating their performance, participants will not be allowed to stay awake throughout the night before the competition or arrive at the venue sleep-deprived in an attempt to gain an advantage.

The organisers plan to hold three competition sessions, with about 20 participants in each group.

Participation is free, while applications will remain open until September 16, 2026.

The organisers said the competition is intended to draw attention to sleep deprivation in Japan, where average sleep duration is considered among the lowest globally.
