The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning again following the death of veteran actor Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80.
News of his death emerged on Friday after fellow actor Kunle Afod announced it in a tribute shared on Instagram.
Afod paid glowing tribute to the late screen and stage icon, writing:
“Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow.
“His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
“Rest well, sir. Your work lives on.”
Born on 27 March 1946 in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo built a distinguished career that spanned several decades. He began his journey in the performing arts in 1964 as a member of the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, where he honed the skills that would later make him one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian cinema.
Throughout his career, Oyewo earned widespread acclaim for his commanding stage presence and memorable performances. Among his most celebrated roles was his portrayal of Odewale in the acclaimed play The Gods Are Not to Blame, written by Ola Rotimi. The performance brought him recognition beyond Nigeria and established him as a leading figure in African theatre.
