Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have foiled a major terrorist plot in Zamfara and Katsina States, killing nine insurgents—including two dreaded kingpins—in a series of fierce gun battles that lasted three days.
The intense operations, carried out between May 1 and 3, also saw troops recover weapons, motorcycles, phones and cash, dealing a heavy blow to criminal networks operating in the North-West.
According to a statement by Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the first encounter took place in Katsina State, where troops on patrol ran into terrorists along the Turare–Yantumaki Road.
A gun duel followed, leaving four terrorists dead, while troops recovered rifles, ammunition, motorcycles, phones and ₦153,000.
But the drama intensified in Zamfara State, where troops launched a high-risk operation in Anka Local Government Area.
Seven terrorists were killed in the operation, including two top commanders identified as Anaruwa and Gomina.
Anaruwa, sources revealed, is the younger brother of notorious terrorist leader Kachalla Idi Aiki.
The operation turned into a fierce battle when terrorists regrouped and attacked the military base at Bagega.
Backed by air support, troops fought back and crushed the attackers.
“In the counterattack, troops neutralised more terrorists and recovered additional weapons and motorcycles,” the Army said.
Further operations on May 3 led to the killing of two more terrorists spotted on motorcycles.
However, the Army confirmed that one soldier lost his life during the operation.
Troops have since tightened security in the area, taking control of key locations to prevent further attacks.
The military urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies with useful information.
