Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has lost the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the 2027 election in Bauchi State.
The APC governorship primary, conducted on Saturday, saw former Governor Mohammed Abubakar emerge victorious after defeating Mr Tuggar and five other aspirants in a keenly contested exercise.
The outcome marks a major political comeback for Mr Abubakar, who governed Bauchi State between 2015 and 2023 under the APC platform.
Announcing the results of the primary election, the party’s electoral committee declared Mr Abubakar winner after securing the highest number of votes cast by delegates across the state.
Although details of the final vote tally were not immediately available, party officials described the exercise as peaceful and transparent.
Mr Tuggar, a prominent figure within the APC and former Nigerian envoy, was considered one of the leading contenders in the race owing to his national profile and political influence in the state.
His defeat is expected to reshape the political calculations ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi, where the APC is seeking to reclaim power from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Supporters of Mr Abubakar celebrated the victory shortly after the announcement, describing it as a reflection of delegates’ confidence in the former governor’s experience and leadership credentials.
Party stakeholders, however, urged all aspirants and their supporters to remain united and work towards the success of the APC in the forthcoming general election.
