Two young children were found dead in a car during extreme heat in southern France. The incident happened in Carpentras, Provence, on Monday afternoon, June 22. Temperatures reached about 38C at the time.
The children were aged two and four. They were found unresponsive inside their family vehicle, which was parked in the garage of their home.
It is still unclear how the children entered the car or how long they stayed inside. Their 33-year-old mother reportedly discovered them later and called for help.
Reports from Le Parisien say the mother claimed she had “forgotten her children” while shopping. She has not yet been questioned by police.
Police and firefighters arrived at around 1.10pm, according to La Provence. They tried to save the children, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
France is currently facing a severe heatwave, with temperatures rising above 40C in some areas. Emergency services and the military are on wildfire alert across the country due to the extreme weather conditions.
