Two people have been killed following an attack at a cinema in the Lekki area of Lagos State after a man allegedly armed with a machete and knife attempted to gain entry into the facility.
The incident occurred on Friday night, triggering panic among patrons and workers at the entertainment centre.
The suspect was reportedly stopped by security personnel while trying to enter the cinema. He allegedly became violent after being denied access and attacked the guards.
According to eyewitness accounts cited by Vanguard, the suspect allegedly stabbed one of the security guards to death and injured another security personnel during the confrontation.
He was subsequently attacked by a mob and died from injuries sustained in the process.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident to Vanguard on Saturday.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, said two people had been confirmed dead while the circumstances surrounding the incident remained under investigation.
“Two people have been confirmed dead,” she said.
Abimbola said the identities of the deceased were yet to be released as investigators continued to piece together what happened.
She added that the suspect appeared to be destitute and was suspected to have been under the influence of drugs when the incident occurred.
The police spokesperson also disclosed that the Chief Security Officer of the cinema had been taken into custody as part of the investigation.
She said the command was working to obtain and review the cinema’s closed-circuit television footage to establish the sequence of events and determine whether other persons were involved.
The police have commenced an investigation into the attack, including the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the two deceased persons had not been made public, while the police had not provided further details on the condition of the injured security personnel.
