Ugo Ugochukwu has made history as the first driver from the United States to win the FIA Formula Three championship after securing the title at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.
The 19-year-old, a former McLaren junior driver, sealed the championship after finishing second in the final race of the season for Campos Racing at the Madring circuit.
According to Reuters, Ugochukwu ended the championship 14 points ahead of British driver Freddie Slater, an Audi junior driver, after entering the final weekend 15 points behind his rival.
Slater, 18, had held the advantage going into the weekend but was unable to maintain his lead as Ugochukwu produced a strong finish to claim the title.

The FIA Formula Three championship is one level below Formula Two in the single-seater racing pathway towards Formula One.
New York-born Ugochukwu follows in the footsteps of past F3 champions Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto, who now race in Formula One with McLaren and Audi respectively.
“We knew we just had to keep it clean to clinch the title, and that’s what we did. No mistakes, brought it home and super pleased,” he said.
