The Governing Council of the University of Calabar, UNICAL, has dismissed eight members of staff, including a professor and two medical doctors, over various cases of misconduct, as part of efforts to strengthen discipline, transparency and accountability within the institution.
The disciplinary actions were approved during the Council’s 174th meeting held on July 3, 2026, after deliberations on reports submitted by relevant disciplinary committees.
The decisions were conveyed in a memorandum signed by the University’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr, Mrs Icha Chukwuka.
The affected staff were found culpable of offences ranging from examination malpractice and duty abandonment to theft, financial misconduct and falsification of examination results.
Among those dismissed is Professor Emilia Oyira of the Department of Nursing Science, who was sanctioned over examination-related misconduct.
The Council also approved the dismissal of Mr Ukachukwu Echezunachi Darlington of the Department of Chemical Pathology, Mrs Akinrinade Opayemi Ogunluyi of the Department of Microbiology, Dr Arum Priscilia Nchekwube of the Department of Internal Medicine, and Mrs Okoi Nyesam Eni of the Clinical Medical Hostel for alleged absence from duty and abandonment of their official responsibilities.
Similarly, Mr Joseph Edet Okon of the Works Department was dismissed over the alleged vandalisation and theft of armoured cables, while Mr Eworo Valentine Ibor of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry lost his appointment for allegedly falsifying and altering examination results.
The Council also approved the dismissal of Mr Emmanuel Adariku of the Alumni Relations Office over the alleged unauthorised withdrawal of funds from the Friends of Malabor/Alumni Trust Funds account.
In a related development, the Governing Council imposed disciplinary measures on Dr Mathias Agba of the Department of Nursing Science instead of dismissal. He was penalised with a two-year delay in promotion and the forfeiture of 50 per cent of his withheld salary after he was found negligent in an examination misconduct case.
The university management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Offiong E. Offiong, said the sanctions underscore the institution’s resolve to uphold ethical standards and enforce accountability across all cadres of staff.
It added that the disciplinary measures reflect UNICAL’s commitment to promoting integrity, professionalism and excellence in the discharge of its academic and administrative responsibilities.
