The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) Prof. Adebooye Clement has condemned the alleged assault on students by military personnel, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.

Confirming in a viral video on social media, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that five soldiers have been arrested in connection with the incident, which reportedly involved military personnel invading the university campus, assaulting students, allegedly raping and harassing female students, vandalising property, and stealing phones and cash.

Describing the incident as “very sad and unacceptable,” the Vice-Chancellor said the military high command had intervened and taken steps to address the matter.

He added that the university is working with relevant authorities as investigations into the incident continue.

He said, “The people we have recruited to help us to safeguard our society have become threats to our peace as a people. The people we are supposed to call upon when we are under security threat have actually themselves become security threats against us.”

“Five of the soldiers have been arrested, we note that they raped our students, they harassed them, they collected phones from students, removed sim cards and took away the phone, they took money from students and boke doors and windows of the hostels.

“We appologise for the phycological torments, I myself have visited the 12 or 13 hostels that these occurred and I wept while I was talking with the military commandant and told him this should not happen in a sane society.

“To the military officers apprehended, they should be restricted around the barracks, we don’t want them around the school environment.”
