US air strike kills senior Daesh leader in northwestern Syria

The US military has killed a senior Daesh leader in an air strike in northwestern Syria, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM).

In a statement released on Wednesday, CENTCOM said the June 19 strike targeted and killed Ali Husayn al-‘Ulaywi as part of continuing operations against the militant group.

The command said the operation was aimed at disrupting and “eliminating extremists who pose threats to Americans, US interests and allies in the region.”

CENTCOM said US forces remain engaged in efforts to dismantle the remnants of Daesh and prevent the group from rebuilding its operational capabilities.

The command added that American troops continue to coordinate with regional partners to target militants and maintain pressure on the organisation across Syria and the wider region.
