US drops ‘Indo’ from Pacific Command name, Department of War claims change is meant to…, did it show incorrect map of India?

The United States has renamed the US Indo-Pacific Command back to its earlier identity, US Pacific Command, restoring its name while keeping its mission unchanged. The change was announced by the US Department of War and is seen as a return to the command’s original designation used for more than seven decades.

The department said the change honours the legacy of the command and its long history in global military operations. Officials stressed operational role, strategic responsibilities and geographic reach remain the same despite the name change. What has changed in the Indo-Pacific command structure?

The rebranding affects only the name of US Indo-Pacific Command, now again known as US Pacific Command. It oversees a vast region from the western US coast to parts of South Asia including India’s western boundary. Officials said the change does not impact partnerships, deployments or security cooperation.

Why did the US reverse the 2018 decision?

In 2018 the command was renamed to highlight the growing importance of the Indian Ocean region. The latest move reverses that decision and restores its historical identity. The Department of War said the change is meant to strengthen continuity and pride among personnel serving in the region.

Did the command show an incorrect map of India?

Alongside the renaming, the website reportedly showed an inaccurate map of India in its area of responsibility section. The map showed Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir as part of Pakistan, drawing attention in regional discussions.

Headquartered in Hawaii, it remains one of the largest US military commands and plays a key role in maritime security, joint exercises, disaster response and regional deterrence across the Indo-Pacific.

Political reactions have also emerged in India. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the move could be a setback for strategic groupings like the Quad, which includes the US, India, Japan and Australia. The Quad remains a key platform for regional cooperation.

Officials clarified the renaming is only symbolic and does not signal any shift in commitment to Indo-Pacific security partnerships.
