Talks between Israel and Lebanon on an expiring ceasefire were “positive” and will take place as planned for a second day, a US official has said.
“We had a full day of productive and positive talks that lasted from 9 am to 5 pm (1300-2100 GMT). We look forward to continuing this tomorrow and hope to have more to share then,” a senior US State Department official said.
Both nations opened talks at the US State Department headquarters in Washington DC following two rounds held on April 14 and 23, as a prelude to peace negotiations.
Since March 2, Israeli indiscriminate attacks in Lebanon have killed more than 2,896 people, wounded over 8,824, and displaced more than 1.6 million, about one-fifth of the country’s population, according to Lebanese officials.
The Israeli army continues daily attacks on Lebanon and consistently breaching ceasefire that was announced on April 17 and later extended until May 17.
