US President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that Iran is trying to assassinate him, saying he is “on every single one of their list.” He accused Tehran of targeting the US leadership and described Iran’s leaders as “evil and sick people.”
“They want to take out the US leader. I’m on every single one of their list. So far, I’ve had a bit of luck, but maybe it won’t last,” Trump said while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
Trump also said that the US memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran is now over after the United States carried out a fresh round of military strikes on Iran.
Why did US launch new strikes on Iran?
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces launched fresh strikes on Tuesday to respond to Iran’s attacks on commercial ships passing through international waters.
According to CENTCOM, the operation targeted Iranian air defence systems, radar sites and more than 60 small boats used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The US said the strikes were meant to impose heavy costs on Iran for attacking ships carrying innocent civilians.
Iran reports explosions, casualties
Iranian state media reported explosions in several areas, including Bandar Mahshahr, where an IRGC member was killed. Explosions were also reported near Bushehr, which is home to Iran’s nuclear power plant.
The US military said the strikes were carried out in retaliation for Iran’s attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran hits back with missiles and drones
In response, Iran launched missile and drone attacks on US-linked military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, according to Iranian media.
Both countries issued missile alerts after the attacks. Kuwait said it intercepted two ballistic missiles and 13 drones, while falling missile debris damaged several power lines, causing electricity disruptions in some areas.
