US and Iran have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at reducing tensions and moving toward a possible peace agreement between the two countries. The agreement was finalised through electronic signatures after negotiators from both sides agreed on a 14-point framework. This framework includes key issues such as the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief, Iran’s nuclear programme, and regional security concerns. It is the first formal US-Iran agreement in years, marking a major diplomatic shift.
However, officials from both Washington and Tehran have made it clear that this is not a final peace deal. Instead, the MoU begins a 60-day implementation period, during which both sides must carry out agreed steps before a full and permanent agreement can be reached.
Iranian officials have described this phase as a “test of implementation,” stressing that success will depend on actions rather than signatures.
Will the ceasefire hold over the next 60 days?
One of the key conditions of the agreement is an immediate halt to hostilities. While tensions have already reduced, the deal remains fragile. Even a small military incident in the Gulf region could disrupt talks and push both sides back into confrontation.
Can the nuclear issue finally be resolved?
The nuclear programme remains the most sensitive issue. Instead of demanding complete dismantling, the agreement proposes monitored down-blending of enriched uranium under International Atomic Energy Agency supervision. Iran has also pledged not to develop nuclear weapons, but verification will be crucial in the coming weeks.
Will sanctions relief actually begin?
The United States has agreed in principle to ease certain oil sanctions, lift parts of the naval blockade, and allow access to frozen Iranian assets. However, these steps are linked to Iran’s compliance, meaning relief will come gradually and conditionally.
A final key concern is the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route. Both sides have agreed to ensure safe navigation, which could ease global energy pressures if fully implemented.
Can this become lasting peace?
The 60-day window will decide whether this MoU becomes a historic peace deal or another failed attempt in US-Iran relations.
