US-Iran peace talks in Switzerland postponed, at least 16 killed as Israel strikes southern Lebanon, here’s what we know

Planned talks between the United States and Iran have been postponed, Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry confirmed, creating fresh uncertainty around ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region. In a statement, the ministry said it remains ready to host and support the negotiations despite the delay. Preparatory work at the Burgenstock venue is still ongoing, but officials have not provided a new date or further details about when the talks may resume.

Why were the US-Iran talks postponed?

While no official reason has been given for the postponement, US officials indicated that the logistics of the negotiations are complex and still being finalised. A White House spokesperson said that US Vice President JD Vance will not travel to Switzerland for now, as the plans are not yet concrete. However, a US delegation is ready and can depart at short notice once arrangements are confirmed.

The spokesperson added that such negotiations are often unpredictable, but the United States is keen to begin technical discussions as soon as possible.

What is happening on the ground in the region?

At the same time, tensions remain high in West Asia. According to reports, Israel Defence Forces carried out strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon after rockets and explosive drones were launched at Israeli forces. This escalation highlights the fragile security situation even as diplomatic efforts continue.

How is the situation affecting global oil markets?

Despite the uncertainty, there are some positive signals on the economic front. Speaking earlier, Vice President JD Vance said that 12.5 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz recently, marking a high point since the conflict began. He also noted that oil prices have dropped close to pre-war levels, and gas prices in the US have fallen below $4 per gallon.

Vance credited the progress to a peace plan between the US and Iran, suggesting that stabilisation efforts are already having an impact.
