A US service member has been killed and another injured during an operation involving unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed. The incident came as the United States launched a new round of airstrikes against Iran, further raising tensions across the Middle East.
US Service Member Killed During Bomb Disposal Operation
According to CENTCOM, the US service member was killed in action on July 18 while carrying out a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance recovered from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone in northern Iraq. Another US service member suffered minor injuries during the operation and is receiving medical treatment.
The military said it is not releasing the names of the deceased or injured personnel until their families have been formally informed. The latest death brings the total number of US service members killed during the nearly five-month conflict to 17.
US Launches Fresh Airstrikes Against Iran
In a separate announcement, CENTCOM said the US military carried out a new wave of airstrikes targeting Iranian military capabilities. The command said the strikes were aimed at facilities and assets allegedly used to support attacks on commercial ships and civilian mariners travelling through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest and most important shipping routes.

Explosions Reported Across Parts of Iran
As the US operation continued, reports of explosions emerged from different parts of Iran. Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that several explosions were heard in the southeastern port city of Chabahar. It also said Iranian air defence systems were activated in the nearby city of Konarak. However, no immediate details were released about the cause of the explosions or the extent of any damage.
Meanwhile, Iran’s state-run Press TV reported that US strikes targeted the northwestern city of Tabriz. US officials have not confirmed the reported strike, and Iranian authorities have not yet released an official assessment of casualties or damage.
Iran Claims Oil Tankers Were Blown Up
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed that two oil tankers were blown up after attempting to travel through the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz. The claim has not been independently verified, and no further details have been provided.
US Embassy Issues Security Alert in Bahrain
Amid the growing tensions, the US Embassy in Bahrain issued a security alert for American citizens. The embassy said it had received information suggesting that Iran may attempt to target unspecified locations in central Manama.
It advised US citizens in Bahrain to remain alert, follow instructions from local authorities and regularly check the latest security guidance. No further information about the possible threat was provided.
CENTCOM Yet to Reveal Strike Locations
CENTCOM has not disclosed the exact locations hit during the latest operation or the scale of the airstrikes. It also said battle damage assessments are still ongoing.
The command maintained that the campaign is focused on weakening Iranian military capabilities linked to attacks on international shipping.
