US President Trump revives India-Pakistan war mediation claim, says he should have won Nobel Peace Prize ‘more than anybody’

US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he played a key role in ending the 2025 military confrontation between India and Pakistan, while arguing that his efforts deserved recognition with the Nobel Peace Prize.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One at Royal Air Force Mildenhall in the United Kingdom on Wednesday, Trump said the conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours had reached a dangerous stage and could have escalated further.

‘Think of it, India and Pakistan. That war was raging. They were a week into it. Eleven planes were shot down, and that war was going to go nuclear.’

India has rejected Trump’s mediation claim

The military confrontation took place in May 2025, following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and India’s subsequent military response. The conflict lasted for about a week before both countries halted military operations.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that his intervention helped bring the fighting to an end. However, New Delhi has consistently denied the claim, maintaining that the ceasefire resulted from direct communication between the Indian and Pakistani militaries without any third-party mediation.

Trump cites praise from Pakistan PM

During his remarks, Trump referred to comments by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, saying the Pakistani leader had credited him with preventing a major disaster.

‘The Prime Minister of Pakistan said President Trump saved 30 to 50 million lives. Well, guess what? Could have been a lot more than that,’ Trump said.

Says he deserved Nobel Peace Prize

Trump also argued that his diplomatic efforts extended beyond South Asia, claiming he had helped resolve several international conflicts, including those involving Azerbaijan and Armenia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda.

‘I should have won that award more than anybody who ever received the Nobel Peace Prize because nobody settled wars. I settled eight of them because of a certain type of personality. I was able to settle,’ he said.

The US President further repeated his earlier assertion that he warned both India and Pakistan of severe economic consequences if the fighting continued.

‘I said, if you keep fighting, I’m going to put a 200 per cent tariff on your country. Said the same thing to the other. I did it with India and with Pakistan.’
