Uzodimma May Resign As Governor, Join Senate Race

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has allegedly perfected plans to resign from office to pursue his senatorial ambition, sources have said.

NewsWatch Nigeria reports that the governor recently declared interest in the Imo West senatorial seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sources who spoke with Premium Times claimed the move was linked to his alleged ambition to become President of the Senate in the next National Assembly.

One of the sources alleged that Uzodimma had struck an arrangement with his deputy, Chinyere Ekomaru, to resign from her position.

The alleged plan, according to the source, was to pave the way for the appointment of a new deputy governor, who would later serve as a “placeholder governor” if Uzodimma resigns to contest for Senate.

The source said, “The governor is actually fighting to be the Senate President. He’s banking on Tinubu to help secure the position.”

Deputy Denies Resignation Claim

However, Ekomaru’s office had denied, in early May, reports that she had resigned as deputy governor.

In a statement, the office described the claim as false and misleading.

The statement read, “This claim, as at this moment and the time it was trending, is entirely untrue and should be disregarded in its entirety.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Chinyere Ekomaru, is currently engaged in official duties as the number two citizen of this great state and continues to serve the state in her capacity as deputy governor.”
