Venezuela is facing one of its worst natural disasters in more than a century after two powerful earthquakes struck the country’s northern coast. The death toll has now risen to at least 235. Rescue teams are racing against time to find survivors trapped under collapsed buildings as strong aftershocks continue to shake the region.
The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck within less than a minute of each other on Wednesday night, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Buildings across northern Venezuela cracked, collapsed, and tilted dangerously, leaving thousands homeless and causing widespread destruction.
Why is the rescue operation moving so slowly?
According to AFP, rescue workers are facing major challenges, including damaged infrastructure, a shortage of trained personnel, and limited rescue equipment. In the worst-hit state of La Guaira, residents desperately tried to save trapped victims with their bare hands.
Doctors at hospitals said many injured children were arriving alone after being pulled from the rubble. Some could identify themselves, while others had only identification bands placed on their arms.
Which countries are helping Venezuela?
Support has poured in from around the world. Switzerland, Spain, France, Portugal, and Mexico have sent rescue teams and specialists to assist in search operations. The United States has announced a $150 million aid package along with warships, transport aircraft, and helicopters. China, India, Brazil, Iran, and Pope Leo XIV have also offered humanitarian assistance, while the United Nations has promised to support relief efforts.
How severe is the damage?
Authorities have declared La Guaira a disaster zone. The international airport in the region has been closed after suffering serious damage, making relief operations more difficult. Tremors were also felt in neighboring Colombia and parts of Brazil, prompting evacuations.
The 7.5-magnitude earthquake is the strongest to hit Venezuela in 126 years. Thousands of families have spent the night on streets or inside their vehicles, hoping rescuers will find their missing loved ones alive before time runs out.
