The death toll from last week’s two back-to-back earthquakes in Venezuela climbed to 1,943, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez has said.
In an address on state television on Tuesday, Rodriguez said that a total of 10,571 people have been injured.
Rescue teams have saved 6,461 people in Venezuela since last week, National Assembly president Jorge Rodriguez noted.
The real figure was likely closer to 20,000, he said, if taking into account thousands more people buried under the rubble in the hardest-hit La Guaira state who “were able to get out on their own or with the help of friends and family.”
