Social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has questioned the Nigerian military’s handling of the country’s persistent insecurity, raising concerns about accountability and the management of security resources.
In a video posted on his Instagram page, the activist compared the military’s response to attacks in the past with recent incidents involving banditry and kidnappings.
According to him, communities previously faced severe repercussions whenever soldiers were attacked, with entire areas allegedly subjected to collective punishment regardless of individual involvement.
“I remember back then, if anything happened in any community involving members of the Nigerian Army, they would shut down the whole community,” he said.
VeryDarkMan also referenced the reported abduction and death of a retired military general in captivity, questioning why the location where the victim was allegedly held had not been overrun by security forces.
He argued that recent incidents of insecurity have raised questions about transparency and accountability in the country’s security architecture.
The social media personality further alleged that the persistence of insecurity may be linked to issues surrounding the management of security funds, calling for greater scrutiny of how resources allocated to combating insecurity are utilised.
His comments have since sparked debate on social media, with many Nigerians discussing military accountability and the need for more decisive action against banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
