Villager’s death sparks attack on soldiers in Plateau

Tension escalated in Kassa community, Kassa District of Barkin Ladi, as angry youths and women attacked soldiers and set a military checkpoint ablaze following the burial of a resident reportedly killed by suspected armed attackers.

The incident occurred late Sunday night at about 11:40 p.m. at a checkpoint in Rapung Kassa, where a crowd overran the facility and destroyed makeshift structures and equipment belonging to security personnel deployed in the area.

The unrest followed the burial of Gyang Nuhu Choji, who was reportedly killed on April 16 by unidentified gunmen believed to be operating within the community.

Residents said the protesters expressed frustration over what they described as repeated attacks and inadequate protection despite the presence of security forces.

According to eyewitness accounts, the demonstrators accused troops of failing to prevent the killing and other incidents in the area, prompting the violent reaction that led to the destruction of the checkpoint.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
