A video showing students suspected to be from a secondary school in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, smoking what appeared to be cannabis inside a classroom has gone viral online, sparking widespread public concern over drug abuse and discipline in Nigerian schools.
The clip, which surfaced on social media on Monday, shows approximately ten male students and one female student dressed in red-and-white school uniforms smoking, dancing and chanting to music inside an empty classroom.
It was not immediately clear when the footage was recorded or whether school authorities had identified those involved.
The video generated significant reactions online, with many commenters expressing alarm over the apparent lack of supervision and discipline in public schools.
Several users called for stricter measures, with one commenter writing that “the decay in some public schools needs urgent attention” and urging a return to stricter disciplinary standards.
The school’s location reportedly about 200 metres from the state secretariat housing the Ministry of Education added to the public outcry.
The Commissioner for Education in Akwa Ibom did not respond to requests for comment.
The incident has renewed concerns about substance abuse among young people in Nigeria, with schools increasingly seen as critical sites for early intervention, counselling and drug prevention programmes.
