Researchers at Cornell University have found that vitamin B12 may help slow aging and improve muscle strength, offering fresh insight into the health benefits of the essential nutrient.
The study, which examined vitamin B12 deficiency in mice, revealed that adequate levels of the vitamin could help protect the body against metabolic stress and support the immune system against disease-causing invaders.
Scientists involved in the research said the findings may have significant implications, especially as millions of people are believed to have low vitamin B12 levels due to poor dietary intake.
Vitamin B12 plays a major role in maintaining healthy blood cells, nerve function, and brain performance. Researchers now believe the nutrient could also contribute to healthier aging and improved physical strength.
Martha Field, an associate professor in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University, said low vitamin B12 status appeared to be associated with reduced muscle mass and possibly lower muscle strength.
She explained that while the exact reason remains unclear, previous studies have linked vitamin B12 deficiency to muscle pain and weakness.
Health experts noted that maintaining muscle mass is important not only for physical appearance but also for reducing injuries, slowing bone loss, and supporting healthy aging.
The study also highlighted symptoms linked to vitamin B12 deficiency, including fatigue, dizziness, tingling sensations, and in severe long-term cases, memory loss.
Experts recommend that adults consume about 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 daily, while pregnant and breastfeeding women require slightly higher amounts.
Foods rich in vitamin B12 include clams, salmon, eggs, yogurt, fortified cereals, and soy milk. Supplements are also available for people unable to get enough from their diets.
Researchers said the findings could help doctors develop more personalised treatments for people living with vitamin B12 deficiency.
