WAFCON: Oshoala, Payne Lead Super Falcons to Victory Over Senegal in Int’l Friendly

Super Falcons continued their preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Senegal in an international friendly played on Friday at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, Ogun State.

The nine-time African champions dominated the opening half and were rewarded with two goals before the break.

Everton midfielder Toni Payne opened the scoring in the 32nd minute after latching onto a well-delivered pass from right-back Shukurat Oladipo and finishing confidently past the Senegalese goalkeeper.

Nigeria doubled their advantage shortly afterwards when Super Falcons Forward, Asisat Oshoala converted from the penalty spot to hand the Super Falcons a comfortable lead.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade nearly added a third goal before halftime, but her effort was denied by Senegal goalkeeper Khadi Faye.

Justin Madugu’s side maintained control after the restart, enjoying the majority of possession and creating additional scoring opportunities, although they were unable to extend their lead.

Senegal, however, mounted a late response and pulled a goal back in the 87th minute when Sokhna Pene unleashed a long-range strike that beat the Nigerian defence.

Despite the late pressure from the Teranga Lionesses, the Super Falcons held firm to secure the victory and continue their unbeaten run in preparation for the continental tournament.

Both teams will meet again at the same venue on Monday in another friendly encounter as they step up preparations for the 2026 WAFCON, scheduled to hold between July and August.

Nigeria remains a successful nation in the history of the competition, having won the WAFCON title 10 times.
