The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to securing the restoration of Nigeria’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Category 1 status, a key requirement for Nigerian airlines seeking direct flights to the United States.
The Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, gave the assurance during a high-level meeting with officials of the United States FAA on the sidelines of the ICAO AFI Aviation Week in Cairo, Egypt, on July 29.
The meeting also reviewed the progress of Air Peace’s proposed direct flights between Nigeria and New York.
Capt. Najomo said Nigeria was ready for the FAA Category 1 reassessment and noted that Air Peace was fully prepared for the required audit.
“Nigeria is ready for the FAA Category 1 reassessment, and Air Peace is fully prepared for the required audit,” he said.
He, however, requested technical assistance and capacity-building support from the FAA in specialised areas to strengthen the country’s preparedness for the reassessment.
Responding, the FAA delegation asked the NCAA to identify the specific areas where support would be required and pledged to provide the necessary technical assistance to facilitate a successful reassessment and pave the way for Air Peace’s planned direct flights to New York.
