Prominent Nigerian lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has criticised the current state of opposition politics in Nigeria, comparing it with the 2014/2015 political era.
His comments have triggered widespread reactions across social media.
Adeyanju wrote in his post: “The opposition of 2014/2015 would have shutdown the country by now with all the anti democratic moves so far. These ones are too useless. We currently do not have any opposition but just social media clout chasers and noise makers.”
Public reactions
The statement generated mixed reactions from Nigerians online, with users sharing differing views on the strength and relevance of the opposition.
Godswill wrote: “Peter Obi’s opposition is only for the turn of the Southeast Christians, on behalf of himself. He is busy hunting for free ticket without contest.”
Oladouble wrote: “Deji, you should know more than this; some opposition figures are now in jail while others are battling with court cases, not neccesarily due to the weights of their alleged crimes but for daring to confront the rulling party. What do you expect them to do in a demoratic setting?”
Onu Peter wrote: “Comrade, is not their faults , then GEJ who was on power then is a democratic man .. this same BAT was one of the people anchoring the protest then o , nobody came after him or them then o … Omo.”
Daniel wrote: “It’s just a shame to see what’s going on in the country without any shutdown so far, compared to 2014/15 shutdown. They are really clueless and just don’t have the interest of the people. You are right sir.”
Anthony Mustapha wrote: “It is impossible for these guys to talk because, according to Obi, everybody don chop and there is nothing left to share. The last chance enemies of Nigeria had to stop Nigeria’s progress was 2023.”
