The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, has said the Nigeria Police Force is working out its strategy on the proposed establishment of state police, following signals from the Federal Government.
Speaking on Tuesday, the IGP disclosed that the police is currently outlining how state policing should be structured and operated.
“Since we got the signal that the Federal Government of Nigeria intends to establish state police, and since we are the federal police, we decided to take the bull by the horn and put down our own side of what we believe on how the state police should be run,” Disu said.
Meanwhile, the IGP has directed all police officers across the country to ensure they wear name tags on their uniforms for easy identification, noting that only those on undercover operations are exempted from the directive.
He stressed the importance of accountability and standardisation within the force, adding that senior officers are already complying with the directive.
“All police officers should have their name tags. All of us on the high table have our names apart from the undercover among us. If you look at all the Commissioners of Police, we have our name tags, so it’s not our standard,” he said.
Disu further noted that Commissioners of Police have been briefed on key operational expectations, emphasizing that they remain responsible for activities within their jurisdictions.
“All the Commissioners of Police are here and that is why we called this meeting. We have a list of things like this that we will want to discuss with them. We have told them earlier and we will still let them know that everything that happens within their area of jurisdiction falls under their control,” he added.
