As talks to end the Iran conflict pick up pace, Donald Trump is aiming for more than just a ceasefire. The US President is reportedly pushing for a major shift in West Asia’s political order, with a renewed focus on expanding the Abraham Accords.
According to reports, Trump told leaders from several Arab and Muslim-majority nations that once the Iran war ends, he expects more countries to recognise Israel and join the accords. The call included leaders from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain.
The proposal reportedly led to an awkward silence, especially from countries that do not have formal ties with Israel.
Why is Trump pushing for a bigger regional reset?
Trump’s strategy goes beyond ending the Iran conflict. He is attempting to reshape alliances in West Asia by encouraging wider acceptance of Israel. His vision builds on the Abraham Accords, which normalised ties between Israel and countries like the UAE and Bahrain in 2020.
However, the biggest hurdle remains Saudi Arabia. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has shown openness in the past, but ongoing tensions and the Gaza conflict have made any move politically sensitive. Riyadh continues to insist on a clear path toward a Palestinian state before recognising Israel.
Can Iran ever join the Abraham Accords?
In a controversial remark, Trump even suggested that Iran could one day join the Abraham Accords. The idea is widely seen as unrealistic.
Iran has long refused to recognise Israel and strongly opposes such agreements. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently reiterated that Tehran would never accept Israel, calling it an occupying power.
What stands in the way of a peace deal?
While Trump has hinted at progress in US-Iran talks, major issues remain unresolved. These include sanctions relief, Iran’s nuclear programme, and control over key routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
At the same time, Israel’s internal politics add another layer of uncertainty. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing pressure ahead of upcoming elections amid criticism over ongoing conflicts.
