Canada has ordered the deportation of Abhijeet Kingra in connection with the firing incident at Punjabi singer AP Dhillon’s residence. The Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) ruled that Kingra was a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, an organised criminal group linked to serious offences such as murder, extortion, shootings and arson. Kingra had entered Canada on a student visa but was later found to be involved in criminal activities.
According to the IRB, Kingra took part in a shooting incident in British Columbia where at least 14 rounds were fired at a property. Authorities also stated that one of his associates set fire to vehicles belonging to the property owner. He and his accomplice are also facing allegations in a similar case in Surrey, British Columbia.
Why did Canada order deportation?
The IRB cited evidence, including a prior court finding in British Columbia, which confirmed Kingra’s links to the Bishnoi gang. IRB member Azeem Lalji noted that the gang has been associated with multiple violent crimes and rising extortion cases across provinces like British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.
What did Kingra claim during the hearing?
Kingra told the board that he was offered 4,000 Canadian dollars to take part in the attack on AP Dhillon’s residence on September 2, 2024. He claimed he did not know about the gang’s involvement and accepted the task to support his family.
Is this part of a bigger crackdown?
Canadian authorities say yes. The Canada Border Services Agency has launched over 400 investigations into organised crime, with at least 55 suspects already deported. Officials argue that the attack was meant to show the gang’s growing influence rather than being just an extortion attempt.
