Who is Sabrina Pasterski? Physicist who built a plane at 14, rejected NASA and Jeff Bezos recruitment offer, now known as Harvard’s ‘next…

Many children dream of becoming pilots, but Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski turned that dream into reality while still in her early teens. At just 14, she flew a single-engine aircraft that she had built herself from a kit.

Years later, her scientific work earned global recognition. The late Stephen Hawking cited her research, while NASA and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin reportedly tried to recruit her. She also reportedly turned down an academic offer worth around USD 1.1 million.

Today, the Chicago-born theoretical physicist is often referred to as the Harvard’s ‘next Albert Einstein’ because of her work on one of the biggest mysteries in modern physics – understanding how gravity works at the quantum level.

Built and Flew Her Own Aircraft Before Learning to Drive

Born in 1993 to a Cuban-American mother and a Polish-American father, Pasterski developed a passion for aviation from a young age. At the age of 12, she began assembling a Zenith CH 601 XL aircraft from a kit. After nearly two years of work, she successfully completed the project and flew the aircraft on her own at 14, years before she was legally allowed to drive.

Her interest in science was equally impressive. While studying at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, she competed for a place on the US International Physics Olympiad team and completed internships at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and Blue Origin.

Outstanding Success at MIT

Pasterski applied to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2010. Although she was initially placed on the waiting list, her homemade aircraft reportedly played a major role in securing her admission.

She completed her physics degree in just three years with a perfect 5.0 GPA. She also became the first woman in nearly 20 years to graduate at the top of MIT’s physics department and the first woman to receive the prestigious Orloff Scholarship.

Research Recognised by Stephen Hawking

After graduating from MIT, Pasterski went on to complete her PhD at Harvard University under renowned physicist Andrew Strominger. Working alongside Strominger and Alexander Zhiboedov, she contributed to research on the spin memory effect, an important concept related to gravitational waves and the structure of spacetime.

The research attracted worldwide attention and was later cited by the late Stephen Hawking in some of his final scientific papers.

Chose Research Over High-Paying Offers

Despite receiving opportunities that many scientists can only dream of, Pasterski reportedly decided not to take them. She was reportedly approached by NASA and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin. Brown University is also widely reported to have offered her an assistant professorship worth around USD 1.1 million.

Instead of accepting these offers, she joined the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada in 2021, becoming one of its youngest research faculty members.

There, she launched the Celestial Holography Initiative, a research programme focused on exploring the relationship between quantum mechanics and gravity. In 2023, the project received an $8 million grant from the Simons Foundation and brought together researchers from leading institutions, including Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge and the Institute for Advanced Study.

Why She Is Compared to Einstein

The comparison between Pasterski and Albert Einstein is based on the scale of the scientific questions she is trying to answer.

While Einstein revolutionised the understanding of gravity through his theory of general relativity, Pasterski is among the researchers working to connect that theory with quantum mechanics, one of the greatest unsolved challenges in physics.

She has never claimed she will solve the problem. In interviews, she has said the excitement of physics lies in not knowing where the next breakthrough will come from. Her passion for discovery, rather than fame or financial rewards, continues to shape her scientific journey.
