Who is this woman for whom Pope broke Vatican tradition and made history? Her name is…, she works as…

In a landmark decision for the Roman Catholic Church, the Vatican has appointed a lay woman to one of its highest administrative positions for the first time in history. The move marks a significant departure from long-standing tradition, under which such senior roles were typically held by members of religious orders.

The woman chosen for the historic post is Maria Montserrat Alvarado. Her appointment is being viewed as a major milestone in the Vatican’s efforts to expand women’s participation in Church leadership.

Maria Montserrat Alvarado to head Vatican communications department

The Vatican announced that Maria Montserrat Alvarado, who was born in Mexico City and became a US citizen in 2008, will take charge of the Dicastery for Communication from November 1.

She will succeed Paolo Ruffini, who is retiring from the position.

The Dicastery for Communication is one of the Vatican’s most influential departments. Established in 2015 by the late Pope Francis, it oversees the Vatican’s news website, radio station, newspaper, press office, publishing division and film library.

Who is Maria Montserrat Alvarado?

According to Vatican News, Alvarado will become the first non-religious woman to lead a Vatican dicastery.

Although several nuns and lay women have previously been appointed to important positions within the Vatican, no lay woman has ever been entrusted with a role of this seniority.

Reacting to her appointment, Alvarado said the decision came as a surprise to her. However, she described it as an opportunity to serve the Church and Pope Leo XIV.

She said she intends to build upon the work carried out by her predecessor, Paolo Ruffini and remain committed to spreading the Church’s message around the world.

Sign of continuing church reforms

Church observers believe the appointment signals that Pope Leo XIV intends to continue the reform agenda initiated by Pope Francis.

During his 12-year papacy, Pope Francis took several steps to increase women’s participation in Vatican governance and leadership roles.

His efforts were widely seen as an attempt to modernise Church administration and create greater opportunities for women within the institution.

Pope Francis had expanded women’s roles

Shortly before his death, Pope Francis appointed two nuns, Raffaella Petrini and Simona Brambilla, to senior leadership positions within the Vatican.

He had also openly criticised the male-dominated culture that has historically existed within parts of the Church.

Before joining the Vatican, Alvarado worked as a news anchor for the US-based Catholic media network EWTN News. Since 2023, she had been serving as the organisation’s President and Chief Operating Officer.

Milestone for women’s leadership in the Vatican

The Vatican’s decision is being widely viewed as a major step toward greater inclusion of women in Church administration.

The appointment not only highlights the growing role of women within the Vatican but also reflects broader efforts to modernise Church governance.

Observers say the move could pave the way for greater female representation in the Church’s senior leadership ranks in the years ahead.
